We (Tara and Layla) post so many pictures to our IG account every day, that you’ve likely seen all these tips come to life in our photos. But you don’t need a glam squad and a photog to get a really good outfit pic – whether you are holding your phone in your hand in front of a mirror, have a darling husband who is willing to #instahubby it for 10 seconds, or you've got some kids above the age of 4 around, you CAN DO THIS! Here are 10 tips to getting a fantastic shot of your Poppy & Dot outfit of the day:
1. FIND A LOCATION
We like to take all of our outfit pics in front of plain walls OR in front of backdrops that don't take away from the clothes. This keeps the focus on our outfits, keeps our feed cohesive, with a lot of matching tones and colors. It seems like a lot of effort but it’s actually not. And if you don't feel like you have this in your house, keep your eyes peeled. Chances are, you've got a perfect spot within walking distance of your house, school, and job.
Even if you don't feel like you have the perfect backdrop, lighting can make or break the shot. Natural light is best for #OOTDs and selfies too. When we're not in the studio, you'll notice that we like to have the light in front of us and we try to avoid having too many shadows anywhere on our face and clothing!
3. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Nailing just the right pose can be hard! You'd think with all the instastories and photoshoots we do that we would have this nailed - but not so! We know what poses work best for each outfit (in a general sense), but we really just go with the poses that make us look and feel our best. You know what wins every time? Taking a snap of you doing everyday things while wearing the clothes you love!
4. HAVE SOMEONE HELP
Remember two seconds ago when we mentioned instahusbands and 4 year olds? This is where they come in handy! Try taking a picture of them first, in the spot where you'll stand and how you want it to look. Show them the pic, swap places, and voila! They can recreate the shot easily. (This also comes in SUUUUPER handy for times when you are without your trusty sidekicks and have to rely on the kindness of strangers!
5. SET TO SQUARE
If you plan to upload your picture of your latest Poppy & Dot favorite directly into Instagram, use the square option on your phone. That way you’re sure to have all the details in your final shot!
6. KEEP IT CASUAL
It might feel ridiculous at the time, but a laugh (even if it's at yourself) makes for a great pic. When in doubt go for a hair flip, or pretend to take a few steps. Trust us! ANYTHING is better than a forced smile or an unnatural pose.
7. TRY DIFFERENT ANGLES
Is your straight on pic just not working? Try taking some from a little above or a little below. Different perspectives make a huge difference AND may give you the opportunity to show off details from your Poppy & Dot signature piece that you haven't noticed before!
8. TRY SITTING DOWN!
There’s no rule that says the pic has to be standing up, so try a seated pose from time to time. We love those photos that show us switching it up!
9. TAKE A TON OF PICS
Have whoever is taking the pics keep snapping all while you’re making small, slight movements. This will give you a nice variety of pics and poses to choose from. (also an awesome way to find out your best angles!)
10. DON'T FORGET DETAILS
Don’t wrap your mini shoot without getting a few pics of your jewelry, bag, and shoes (kids, house, you get our drift) so you’ll have even more gorgeous pics to post! People don't just want to see and buy your dress. They want to buy and see you! They want to see how YOU put your entire outfit together: how to make it work with a belt, what shoes to wear with it, and if they could get away with pairing it with their favorite go-to accessory. They're basically looking for permission from you to make a statement with their fashion choices!
